There comes a time in life when you realize it’s time for a fresh start. Okay, maybe that was a bit dramatic :). We moved from Teesside to Scotland last year. However, the move wasn’t as easy as I expected because I was still working on my master’s thesis. Plus, you can imagine what it’s like to move to another country with an active toddler insert weird smile. Anyway, we moved to the place I had longed to visit—a place where we could begin the next chapter of our lives: Aberdeen, Scotland.

From Teesside to Scotland: A Leap of Faith

Teesside, with its industrial roots and no-nonsense charm, had been home for a year. I shared what it was like moving from Dubai to Teesside about two years ago. It’s a region known for its resilience and hardworking spirit, a place where the people are as tough as the steelworks that once defined it. But after my academic journey was about to conclude, I yearned for change—a new environment that would challenge me in different ways and provide fresh opportunities.

Aberdeen, known as the “Granite City,” was the answer. Moving to Scotland, with its rugged landscapes and rich cultural heritage, felt like the perfect way to start anew.

Embracing a Different Culture

One of the most striking differences I noticed after moving was the cultural shift between Teesside and Aberdeen. Teesside is quintessentially English, with its own unique blend of working-class traditions and modern urban life. Aberdeen, on the other hand, offers a distinctively Scottish experience, deeply rooted in history and local customs.

The Scottish culture is vibrant, with its own set of traditions, from the sound of bagpipes echoing through the streets to the celebration of Burns Night in January. The Scots have a deep pride in their heritage, which is evident in everything from their accents to their festivals. But beyond the kilts and haggis, there’s a welcoming and inclusive spirit in Aberdeen that I’ve come to appreciate deeply. The people here are warm and friendly, always ready to lend a hand or share a story.

The Weather: A Different Kind of Cold

Another noticeable difference is the weather. Teesside, in the northeast of England, has its fair share of chilly days, but Aberdeen takes cold to a new level. Located on the northeastern coast of Scotland, Aberdeen bears the brunt of the North Sea’s icy winds. Winters are long and harsh, with a damp chill that seems to seep into your bones.

I wasn’t very surprised by the Scottish weather since I had heard many stories about it. However, my first winter in Scotland was quite challenging. Surprisingly, I’ve grown to enjoy it. There’s something invigorating about the crisp Scottish air; the city is well-prepared for the cold. Moreover, the frequent sight of snow-dusted granite buildings gives Aberdeen a magical, almost otherworldly feel during the winter months.

City Life in the Granite City

Aberdeen is a city of contrasts- while it’s known for its granite architecture, giving it a somewhat austere appearance, it’s also a bustling hub of activity. The city’s ties to the oil and gas industry have attracted a diverse international community, and you can feel this global influence in everything from the food scene to the variety of cultural events on offer.

Compared to Teesside, Aberdeen feels more compact but also more cosmopolitan. The city center is always alive, whether you’re wandering down Union Street with its mix of shops and restaurants or exploring the more historic areas like Old Aberdeen. The city’s size makes it easy to navigate, and I’ve enjoyed discovering new spots—from cozy cafes to quiet corners in Duthie Park.

A Welcoming Community

One of the things that struck me most about Aberdeen is its sense of community. Despite being a city, it has a friendly, small-town feel where people are genuinely welcoming. Moving to a new place is always daunting, but the warmth of the Aberdonian people made the transition smoother than I anticipated.

The strong community spirit here, with plenty of local groups and events, makes it easy for people to get involved and meet new friends. Whether it’s joining a local club, or just chatting with neighbors, Aberdeen has a way of making you feel at home.

Discovering My Favorite Spot: Aberdeen Beach

Of all the places I’ve explored so far, Aberdeen Beach has quickly become my favorite. Known to some as the “treacherous TikTok celebrity,” this beach is as beautiful as it is unpredictable. I saw the signpost a few days ago and was a bit confused until I looked it up on Google. The nickname comes from the beach’s occasional fierce waves and strong currents, which have made it a bit of a sensation on social media, but for me, it’s more than just a viral spot.

There’s something captivating about the contrast between the tranquil stretches of sand and the raw power of the North Sea. Whether I’m walking along the shoreline, listening to the rhythmic crashing of waves, or simply sitting and taking in the view, the beach has become my go-to place for relaxation and reflection. It’s a space where I can unwind, breathe in the fresh sea air, and feel connected to nature—an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Looking Forward

Moving to Aberdeen was, without a doubt, a big step—a leap into the unknown. This city, with its unique blend of history, culture, and modernity, has offered me the fresh start I was seeking. While I’ll always cherish my time in Teesside, Aberdeen has given me a new perspective and a new place to call home.

As I settle into life here, I’m excited about what the future holds. Whether it’s exploring more of the Scottish Highlands, continuing to grow professionally, or simply enjoying the day-to-day life in this vibrant city, I know that moving to Aberdeen was the right choice for me. It’s the beginning of a new adventure, and I’m looking forward to every moment of it.
