Have you ever imagined how treating yourself the way you treat your business would be? There would be fundamental principles and rules to guide your business if you have a business, right? Treating yourself as a business entity means you treat yourself in a manner that can improve your wellbeing.

I don’t mean “selling yourself”; what I mean is “applying those principles that improve a business to your personal life”. Just thought to throw it in there for more clarity.

You may wonder if this is possible; well, let’s take a closer look at these 9 key points in treating yourself as an entity.

1. Personal leadership. This means being able to lead yourself in the direction that you desire. The purpose of leaders in a business is to seek ways to make a business more successful. Therefore, personal leadership means you lead your life on the path of success.

2. Vision statement. This is basically where you want to be. We should all have a vision or purpose that guides us to become who we want to be. Even if you don’t have it all figured out, there are ways to get to where you find fulfilment in what you do.

3. Mission statement. The purpose of a mission statement is to highlight how you will achieve your vision. It’s important to have a mission statement because this will guide you in attaining your personal goals, visions, and aspirations.

4. Self-worth. Every business is worth something, and it’s the desire of every business owner to increase their business worth. To personalize this, it should be your desire to have a sense of self-worth. I don’t mean you should be proud; I mean you should know your value and not settle for less.

5. Role model. Most business owners have role models they emulate. An individual may choose to have role models they can emulate to improve their lives.

6. Personal branding. Most businesses have a motto, therefore as a person, what’s your motto, what do you want to be known for. Relating personal branding to a non-business lifestyle, the basic question to ask is, “what are your core values and authentic styles about?”

7. Agenda/plans. I don’t mean you should be so strict or rigid in your personal life but develop ways to achieve your goals.

8. Investments. Most businesses invest in tangible and intangible assets; as individuals, invest your money, time, and energy in things that would yield good results.

10. Saving. Some businesses cut costs by reducing excess costs allocated to what they consider trivial. You can do the same by reducing your excess cash outflow as a method of saving.

11. Business coach. To strive, a business owner may seek counsel from a business coach. As an individual, whenever you feel there’s a need to improve yourself but don’t know how to, seek counsel from a professional coach, counsellor or therapist.

12. Team management. Whether you are in a heterogeneous or homogeneous team, there will be rules to guide the team to perform optimally—for instance, conflict management, reward systems, etc. Personally, in your relationship with family and friends, you should understand boundaries and relate with people fairly.

In summary, we often give so much attention to what gives us financial freedom while less attention is given to self-improvement. Please don’t wait until people tell you how important you are to them before you believe you are important!
