A friend suggested this post so enjoy 🙂 One of the benefits of going on a vacation is learning something new, for instance, local food. I don’t consider that a benefit because I’m not a foodie, and I don’t particularly appreciate trying new food to avoid surprise allergies in foreign places.Â
When I visited Ghana some months ago, I ate Ghana Jollof and goat meat pepper soup ( I almost ate Banku, but oh well); it was sumptuous. Still, I preferred eating butter bread, bun bread, waffles and similar stuff as that was the safest food for my tummy (Okay, you can stop judging now 😬). That aside, did you know that if you were to travel on a budget, one of the ways to save cost is to create a food budget? You’d be surprised at how much you’d save and have a pleasant vacation if you made some adjustments here and there.
Below are expert tips and strategies that can help you slash your grocery/meal costs without sacrificing nutrition when on a vacation.
1. Avoid eating out, especially if you have an apartment or an Aparthotel.
2. Go to restaurants that offer some student discounts —a great tip for students.
3. If you are lodging in a hotel, you can order food online from Bolt Food, Jumia Food, Zomato and so on. Compared to the hotel food, this may be a cost-effective option. However, you have to check with the hotel to know if this is allowed.
4. Treat yourself to an expensive meal once in a while. According to reverse psychology, this will make you save towards it and enjoy the meal.
5. Eat more fruits and vegetables than fast food.
6. Shop at discount centres (be sure the products are fresh).
7. You might want to have lunch or dinner with friends; that is, you bond with them and also get a reduction in the price. Well, in some restaurants.
8. Have a cookout plan with friends to select days one person will cook for the group. A meal plan might be extreme, but hey, if it seems worth it, try it. I haven’t done this, but I know people who did, and it went well for them.
9. Before you order an expensive meal you’ve never eaten, be sure to ask questions about the food.
10. Store food properly.
In sum, this post is to help those who might want to save some cash in a new city.
If you aren’t travelling on a budget, enjoy all the benefits of visiting another city and try the local dishes.
