how to make leisure walking more fun

If you’re an ardent reader of my blog, you’ll know how much I enjoy leisure walking around my neighbourhood. Initially, it wasn’t easy to create a walking routine, but it became a hobby when I finally got used to it!

Before I go further into today’s topic, let me explain what leisure walking is and how it differs from fitness walking.

Leisure walking is done in a calm, unhurried and relaxed manner. For example, taking a leisure walk around a park and stopping to smell the roses, walking around the mall and stopping by some stores to window shop, whereas fitness walking refers to the type of walking that produces health and fitness benefits. To be a fitness walker, you should walk briskly to have the desirable health and fitness benefits. In addition, you should give proper attention to correct walking techniques.

I’m glad that is out of the way *smiles*.

I read an article a few months ago about the benefits of leisure walking. It summarized how a leisure walk could make you more active physically, emotionally and mentally. In general, I agree with the benefits of leisure walking. Being consistent with my routine has made me manage stress better, know more about my environment, connect with people, bond with my son, trust me, the list goes on.

So how and when did I take up walking as a hobby? Well, I guess this is the perfect time to appreciate my mom for introducing me to this relaxing and fun way to stay fit. We created a strong bond by taking relaxing walks in the evenings more than a decade ago.

I know you might wonder what makes it fun to walk around a particular place for an extended time. There are various ways to keep yourself occupied during the period.

  1. Listen to an Audiobook or a Podcast.

2. Listen to your favourite workout music.

3. Go with your friends.

4. Explore different places; parks, malls, beaches etc.

5. Dress comfortably. My favourite leisure walk outfit is a jogger set.

6. Going with your toddler? Take a stroller in case your toddler is tired.

7. Choose a perfect time. I usually go in the evening.

8. Start with short distances, then work your way up.

9. Monitor your progress; this will motivate you to go out more.

10. Have a support group by sharing your progress with them. (Optional).

11. Take a bike along, in case you get tired.

12. Don’t forget to stay hydrated on the move.

13. Don’t go with your wallet; otherwise, know you are going on a shopping spree.

Overall, it’s up to you to decide:

  • How long you want to it last.
  • If it will be an active or a passive leisure walk.
  • Where you want to go.

Finally, you must discuss with your doctor before engaging in this form of activity.
