What you need to know about the Dubai and Sharjah Abra Rides

Have you ever desired to do something trivial but for some reason it felt like that won’t happen anytime soon? Well, that was me a couple of years ago. I wanted to go on these two boat rides (in Dubai and Sharjah) but was always procrastinating. Luckily, last month I was able to overcome my procrastination and achieve my desire.

I took two abra boat rides in different Emirates last month- Dubai and Sharjah and I’m glad I did because I felt astonished.

The word abra comes from the Arabic verb “Abara” which means to cross. For some decades, it has remained one of the UAE’s frequently used modes of transport, making it the symbol of the city’s history and heritage.

Based on my experience, the abra boat ride in Dubai serves as a means of transportation between various parts of Dubai while the boat ride in Sharjah offers a bird’s-eye view of the walkways, bridges, and skyscrapers in Sharjah. I’ll share more details of both experiences below.

1. The abra boat ride in Dubai was from Baniyas to Al gubaiba terminal while that of Sharjah started from Alqasba and came back to the same terminal.

2. The boat ride in Dubai is a traditional means of transportation while that of Sharjah is a relaxing traditional abra boat.

3. I spent about 5 minutes on the boat while the Sharjah ride took about 20 mins to have a glimpse of the beautiful city.

4. You’ll have the opportunity to do some shopping when you alight at Al gubaiba terminal so get your wallet ready while in Sharjah you will enjoy an extensive view of some parts of the Emirate, especially at night.

5, On both rides, if you plan on going with a child, it’s advisable to go with a nanny or another adult.

6. Food isn’t allowed on the rides.

7. The price per person in Dubai is 1 dirham while Sharjah has various prices, for instance:

AED 100 for a Private Abra tour.

AED 15 for adults.

AED 10 for children aged 4 – 10 years old.

Free for children below 4

8. The sitting arrangement is well coordinated. This is for those who are aqua-phobic (I was a bit scared at first😁).

9. To enjoy the ride in summer, go in the evening (Summer is really hot!).

10. Enjoy the ride.

If you’ve been on any of these abra boat rides, I’d like to read your experience in the comments section. More pictures below

  1. Thanks for your recommendations on this blog. Just one thing I want to say is that purchasing consumer electronics items from the Internet is not new. In truth, in the past few years alone, the marketplace for online electronics has grown substantially. Today, you can get practically almost any electronic tool and product on the Internet, ranging from cameras in addition to camcorders to computer components and game playing consoles.
