agege bread

*Sigh* How will I write this post without offending people with the “perfect” baking skills?

Hey guys, I shared in a recent post that I have been working on my baking skills. It gives me so much joy to write that I HAVE BEEN BUSY MAKING HOME MADE BREAD!

Was that loud?

I enjoy eating bread a lot; I could have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and won’t get tired of it.

My first baking attempt was dramatic; I was excited and afraid. Well, I didn’t want to end up baking some ugly-looking bread with a horrible taste, and that was what I did. The plan was to make agege bread (Nigerian bread).

I tried almost all the recipes I saw on Youtube (no offence), but I didn’t get the desired results I desired, so I called my sister before making up my mind to close the oven for good.

She gave me the ‘bread changing’ recipe that has made me bake for the past two weeks. Indeed, the simple recipe makes my homemade bread look, feel and taste amazing.

At this point, you must have imagined how my bread tastes 🙂 .

instant yeast
Ingredients.
  1. Add 5 cups of patent flour.
  2. Add a half sachet of instant yeast.
  3. Add three spoons of sugar.
  4. Add three tablespoons of vegetables/sunflower oil or butter.
  5. Add one cup of milk (optional).
grand mills flour
Directions.

Step 1. Mix the ingredients in a large bowl including the yeast, because it is instant yeast. Add warm milk if you use liquid milk or warm water. Stir it till it forms a soft dough.

Step 2. Knead the dough for 5 minutes on a tray or flat surface.

Step 3. Put the dough in a bowl, cover it and put it in the oven or a warm place to rise. Wait for an hour.

Step 4. Knead the dough softly and then put the dough in a baking pan.

Step 5. Wait for another one hour for the dough to rise.

Step 6. Bake at 200 degrees for 30-40 minutes.

Step 7. Once it is ready, leave it out to cool before removing it from the pan.

You can watch the short video I made HERE.

Baking is for everyone. You can do it if you try. I used to think I would never be able to get it right, but here I am, baking every day like it is my purpose. To be honest, I don’t measure the ingredients whenever I bake; I already know how they should look when I pour it so I throw everything in there and do the needed. You might be thinking, “isn’t this a recipe for disaster?” no, it is not when you get used to baking.

Disclaimer: This post isn’t for people with organised and symmetrical baking skills.

For those who want to begin their baking journey, this is what you should know.
  • I tried both powdered and warm liquid milk and I got the same result.
  • It is not a must to add milk.
  • I didn’t use egg (obviously).
  • The process is time-consuming. It took about 3 hours to bake but the outcome is satisfying.
  • Instead of sugar, you can use honey.
  • You can use oil instead of butter.

The purpose of this post is to give hope to non-bakers or if you have tried severally but didn’t get a good result. 🙂
